Croydon 3 stage great comeback to beat Mitcham 1

Croydon 3 went into the game against Mitcham 1 hoping to continue their good run and push to finish top out of the other 3rd teams in the league.

One section of the team was unchanged from recent games with Tom, Ed, Hannah and Jules taking first attack with Ben, Josh, Becky and Sarah defending.

The game got off to a rocky start with Mitcham finding their stride quickly and sinking the first two goals of the game. Croydon got on the board soon after but Mitcham maintained their control of the game by extending their lead. It wasn't as if Croydon were playing poorly in either attack or defence but the difference came down to Mitcham taking their chances. Croydon were creating more than enough opportunities but simply could not convert them. This was the story of the half in what was an enjoyable and hotly contested game. Unfortunately for Croydon the half time whistle sounded with the score at 3-7 in Mitcham's favour.

The team were not downbeat during the half time break with everyone agreeing that the score did not offer a fair assessment of the contest; it flattered Mitcham. Susan offered some top tips for how to bring the score back and Croydon returned to the action ready to turn the tide.

The first two goals of the half were going to be crucial in Croydon's attempt to get back into the game. Croydon were clinical from the off and as Mitcham tried to get back into their rhythm Croydon took two quick goals to bring the score back to 5-7 - game on! The second half was a dominant display from Croydon in both defence and attack. The entire team gave everything for every second of the half. Defences were strong and disciplined; attacking had more intent and took advantage of Mitcham's errors in defence, conceding four penalties throughout the half. Croydon were growing in confidence and took the lead towards the end of the game. Having completed an outstanding comeback Mitcham snuck a goal to bring the scores to 8-8. No need to panic! With encouragement from the sidelines and the belief and eagerness to succeed Croydon again took the lead. This time the lead was to not be given up and Croydon saw out the game with clever use of the ball and sustained possession. Mitcham managed only their second goal of the half late on but this was to be Croydon's day running out 11-9 winners. A most pleasing win following an excellent comeback.

Positives:
Ben - Kept his cool to convert two crucial penalties and added a further two goals, great attacking performance.
Becky - Tireless defending and exceptional work rate in attack; won the penalties for Ben to convert.
Sarah - Powerful in collect and recycled the ball to allow Croydon to maintain lengthy attacks.
Josh - Scored a lovely runner (his first for Croydon?) and defended excellently; gave Hannah a run for MVP.
Ed - Fought hard for collect and created numerous chances; unlucky not to have scored more.
Tom - Remained calm when stepping up to the plate to score two penalties to give Croydon the lead. Defended stubbornly.
Jules - Unfortunate not to score, her display deserved it. Relentless movement round the post creating chances for the section.
Hannah - Had her girl in her pocket throughout and could have had more goals. Earned a crucial penalty late in the game. MVP.

Epic section of 3's defence keeps the 4th in the game.

Croydon 4 played Highbury 3 with Roger Vic Jocelyn and Jo in first attack and Paul Mark Vicky and Dani in defence. It proved to be a low scoring event with Croydon struggling to make fluent passing due to the pressure of the front defence of Highbury. Croydon went into a 3 nil lead with 2 goals from Roger and one from Mark. Jo making her first start in a league game for more years than she would care to remember unfortunately pulled her calf and would take no further part in the match. Jo wish you a speedy recovery and hope it has not put you off running round the korfball pitch again.
Paul scored a neat long short before Highbury made it onto the board to give the half time score 4-1.

Half time gave Croydon time to think about how to play with a section of 3 and Roger Vic and Jocelyn took it all in their stride using the defence to provide the extra players when in attack and turning to collect any shot Highbury put up in attack. This allowed Roger to get his 3rd of the game with a running in shot 5-1 and Mark with a shot from around the post 6-1 Croydon. Then followed an epic display of defence from Roger Vic and Jocelyn while Paul Mark Vicky and Dani could not find the right pass 6-3 Highbury. Change round and Jocelyn finds the basket Highbury get one back but Croydon run out 7 4 winners in a very enjoyable gut tough game. Well done to Roger Vic and Jocelyn. Jo get well soon.

Croydon 5 overcome strong Highbury 5 at RR

Croydon 5 played Highbury 5 with Martin, Callum, Lorna and Char in first attack and Adam, Jon, Jade, and Becky in first defence. It was a tight and tough first half with Croydon going in to a 3 -1 lead with a goal from Lorna, a rare running in shot, Adam penalty, and Becky a good medium distance basket.
Highbury then woke up and scored the next 3 to be 3-4 up however Adam and Martin had better ideas to make it 5-4, before a Highbury goal just on the stroke of half time tied it up at 5-5.
The second half started with Becky ghosting passed her player twice to give Croydon the perfect start to the second half 7-5 Croydon. Highbury struck back and took a slender 7-8 lead. Jade with a well taken penalty brought back the score to 8-8. Highbury scored and then goals from Martin, Adam 2, Callum, Char, and Becky took Croydon into a 14-9 lead and although Highbury scored 2 late goals the fifths had done well to win 14-11. Well done to all and the only player not to score on the team was Jon so extra training for him on Thursday.
