Croydon play well but Nomads 2 clinch it in the last 10 mins

Croydon travelled to Epsom to play Nomads 2 trying to put a recent draw against Nomads 3 far behind them. Jess Maguire was in for Becky Pratt with Kim Munro recovering from a knock in training. Nomads 2 fielded a strong team with the experienced Simon Cole down one end and Croydon's nemesis from the Nomads 3 game, Ollie Bell, down the other.

Coach Steve Johnson asked for a controlled attack and 1-on-1 defence and Croydon heeded those words well in the first 10 mins racing to a 6-2 lead with great goals from Luke James and Zak Omar, plus a couple of penalties. Nomads 2 were looking a bit shell-shocked but they soon gathered themselves and mounted a comeback, scoring the next 4 goals, 3 of them against James.

Maguire scored the next goal to restore Croydon's lead at 6-7 but with Omar off, Stephen Gooch was called into action and unfortunately his player scored to again level things up. Nomads took the lead for the first time in the match but Withers equalised before conceding another. James scored a drop-off though to bring a topsy-turvy parity at half-time: 9-all.

Nomads 2 got off to the best possible start in the 2nd period with 2 quick goals and then a 3rd but Maguire scored another and Omar won another penalty, further goals were exchanged before Munro's luck was out as her ankle buckled from a fairly innocuous rebound and so the experienced Dawn Aindow came up for a rare 1st team appearance. Omar scored 2 long shots and Maguire a 3rd to level the game at 15-all.

From here the pressure seemed to get to Croydon and a couple of silly passes led to a couple of goals and despite a penalty from James, Croydon never looked like recovering the lead in the few remaining minutes and Nomads didn't look back as they finished with their biggest lead of the match, final score 20-16.

Overall a good performance from Croydon for 50 minutes, especially the start which they will surely be looking to repeat over the remaining fixtures this season.

A very close Croydon Derby but Croydon 3 edge the win

Both teams arrived brightly at Royal Russell for the local Croydon derby between the third team and fourth team. Luke, in anticipation for refereeing, even shaved his legs! (Unfortunately this is true!)

First attack for Croydon 3 was Tom , Ed, Julia and Hannah and in first attack for the opposition was Jon D, Anneka, Sarah and Josh. Croydon 3 started off well creating lots of opportunities with Hannah R scoring the first goal with a running in shot. However to quickly level the score, Anneka ran her player to make the score 1-1.

With some excellent play working around the post from Croydon 3 and an equally solid defence from Croydon 4, Craig managed to score a drop off to make the score 2-1 to the Croydon 3. Croydon 4 attack of Roger, David, Jocelyn and Annie were tireless in attack and created lots of opportunities. At the other end, Croydon three converted another goal with a long shot from Dawn giving Croydon 3, a 2 goal lead.

However, a very quick and well worked attacked from Croydon 4 created space for Josh to score a lovely 4 metre shot to make the score 3-2. Both teams were really working hard both in attack and defence, making it an enjoyable game to watch. It was Croydon 3 who scored next from Tom with a 3 metre shot to make the score 4-2.

As the ends swapped, Croydon 3 attack of Ben, Ren, Craig and Dawn were beginning to gell as a section, resulting in Ben scoring a long shot to make it 5-2. Not to be outdone by his old Swan team mate, Roger replied by scoring a one handed running in shot to make to the score 5-3 to Croydon 3.

Following half time, Croydon 4 (Sarah, John, Anneka and Josh) started the second half in attack. A very clever long pass from John, created space for Sarah to drop off and pop in a well-executed shot. Quickly followed by Hannah R scoring a running in shot to make the score 6-4. Teams switched again and Roger scored a middle distance shot passed out by Annie to make it 6-5. The comeback for Croydon 4 looked well and truly on!

Next goal came from Croydon 3, with Ben scoring a running in shot, fed by Ren to make it 7-5. Croydon 4 replied with a well worked attacked from the girls (and equally good defence from Ren and Dawn), however Sarah managed to find space and score a 4m shot to make it 7-6. This was quickly followed up with a similar shot from Tom at the other end.

Croydon 3, managed to extend their lead with two goals from Ben making it 10-6. However, Croydon 4 had definitely not given up and continued to compete. They had a great 2 minute attack of all players taking very close long shots that just didnít quite convert. Josh put an end to this with a lovely 4 metre shot making it 10-7. However, the comeback just wasnít meant to be and in the last minute, Ed put the game to bed with the final score of 11-7.

Well played to both Croydon teams and Luke for refereeing. Thanks to David for the new look score board too! A very exciting game to watch for a Croydon neutral!
