Croydon outgunned against strong Bec side

Croydon 1 took on Bec again this week. With a strong side of international players, it was always going to be a tough game for Croydon.
Bec scored the first 4 or 5 but then a beautiful long shot from Stephen gave everyone a boost.
Unfortunately, Croydon had quite a static first half with the second goal coming from a very cool headed Stephen as he took a penalty.
Half time score 18-2. With a positive team chat we faced the second half with heads high.
However, unfortunately the second half was a similar story. Just after half time, Zu replaced Andy and soon scored a ‘Zuper’ goal (sorry). Goal after goal came from Bec, with all their players getting on the scoreboard.
In some order Hannah and Nigel scored some lovely long shots and Nigel converted a free pass with minutes to go before the end.
Janine also made her debut for the 1sts and did well to keep her player from scoring.
Croydon looked to finish with 6 goals but by with renewed confidence following a near miss, Kathy slotted a long shot in with a most reserved celebration this week…
Final score 39-7
Again, several names came up for MVP. Adam did well battling against his player under the post, whilst Kim kept her kool against a top England player. But MVP it goes to Sarah this week for fantastic play and strong 1:1 defending, not only of her player but Kathy’s aswell!

Croydon 4 edge passed Bec 5 to remain top!

Croydon 4's exciting season continued with a well crafted but low scoring win against Bec 5 who were always in the game but somehow shouldn't have been.

There were some familiar faces in the team but good to see Mark and Karen stepping up to the plate and also Danielle returning from injury.

First attack was Dawn, Hannah,Tom and Brian and what a good combination they were. shots came from all players and directions and the ball was recycled many times. The only thing they couldn't do was put the ball in the basket and this was a theme throughout the game. At the other end Danielle, Karen, Mark and Jon defended resolutely and, whilst maybe not so impressive as their teammates, actually ended up scoring more of the goals!

As usual memory is a little confused by the action but I think Bec scored first and Croydon responded
before Croydon nudged ahead and Bec themselves responded. Then Bec took the score up to 4-2 but by half time Croydon had battled back to 4-4 or was it 5-4? Who cares the important thing was that Croydon built on their lead in the second half and in reality should have been more comfortable winners.

Karen needs special mention for her running in shots and bounceability. She was taken out once (unintentionally) by one of the Bec boys and then a second time when her shoulder seemed to pop out. Mark was on the scene and gave her a special sort of hug which sorted out the problem and, whilst painful, Karen resolutely soldiered on to a deserved MVP. But that isn't to decry the efforts of the whole team who all gave 100% effort showed no little skill. Thanks also to Bec for a very friendly match.

Croydon 5 try hard but Bromley youth and experience win the game

Croydon 5 players were a mix of experience and youth. Starting in attack were the experience of Neville (who had also just played a hard for the Swans), Anneka with the youth of Jade and first ever game for Josh! Leaving defense as experienced Lorna, Paul (still newish to korfball but not young) with the youth of Alice and Callum.

Defense not up to par as we let in 2 goals but there was nothing Paul could do for that long shot and a turn in feed is always sneaky. Our new defense were in the same boat as Bromley scored another long shot. Roll up me as thought we needed a Croydon goal to keep in the game! With the switch Neville then scored a penalty. Woo hoo as sure he wasn't in the line up pre the game that I said everyone score a penalty, which they did. Croydon continued to try to defend and worked hard with passing and moving, our remaining shots all missed and Bromley scored another 4 leaving the half time score 2 - 7.

Everyone was tired at half time after fighting for space, trying to keep the ball moving. Our passes were intercepted as Bromley marked tight, every Croydon player worked hard and got free to put shots up which is good. Josh did not look like he was playing his first game with fabulous collections and moving around to keep his player busy. Jade likewise was keeping her player concentrating on her with determined moves. Anneka never gave up with long shots, runners, covering in defense. Neville worked endlessly with interceptions, collections, shots (shame more didn't go in but hey he had just played against Bromley 1).

My section is for me to have scored more of my shots as missed too many, and learn my lesson after in theory telling Alice how to not throw the ball into her opponents hands doing it myself! Alice a star as scored a fabulous looking mid shot and did keep going with a player who had arms everywhere. Paul after being told once to follow his long shot did and did try throughout the game. Callum ran and ran finding space and worked hard to keep the ball moving at one time even keeping the ball in play beautifully.

We did play well and should be proud as Bromley are a drilled team who know how each other play. Excellent potential for the 4 teenagers who played. Everyone could have been MVP with the continuous effort but it goes to Neville for dedication. Come on 5ths in our next game x

Swans enjoy competitive fixture against league leaders.

The Swans entertained Bromley 1 at Royal Russell having had a week off since facing their opponents in a very one sided affair at Trinity. With Bromley's well drilled tactics fresh in their mind, the Swans changed things up with Ben, Joe, Becki and Jocelyn in first attack and Rog, Nev, Sturge and Jess in first defence. Bromley started brightly and opened the scoring early on, only for Ben to quickly reply from the penalty spot. Goals were traded regularly throughout the first half, however Bromley managed to keep the Swans at arms length heading into the half time break with a comfortable cushion.
The Swans started the second half far quicker than in recent weeks and soon found their stride in an attempt to upset the current league leaders. Despite the Swans putting their opponents under pressure with some well worked attacks from both sections, Bromley continued to score regularly and maintained their lead over the home side. Bromley eventually ran out 19-13 victors, although the Swans can take pride in their performance as they pushed the leagues champions elect all the way by racking up an impressive 13 goals and displaying the never say die attitude and fight that has been pivotal in many of the teams positive performances over the season.
Thanks to Becki and Neville who stepped in to make Swans debuts. Both of whom were in the running for MVP as Becki worked tirelessly at the post and used all her experience to win a number of penalties. Whilst Neville collected endless attacks and grabbed a well deserved hat trick. Thanks also to David for reffing and the support from all the Croydon faithful.
