Croydon 2 cruise past Bec 3

With a fine scattering of snow covering the green flowing fields of Royal Russell, Croydon 2 rolled up for their turn in a packed day of Korfball which had already seen no less than 4 of their fellow teams secure maximum points on a chilly Sunday in January.

Having lost out to Bec 3 earlier in the season the Blues took to the pitch looking for revenge and with a strong outfit confidence was high. Croydon lined up with with Anna Jeanes, Simon Mills (c), Laura Nicholls and Adam Stevens in first attack; whilst Marc Brazzill, Ed Chaney, Jane Hudspith and Ren Williamson took first defence duties.

Something was clearly in the Royal Russell air, as the home side raced out of the blocks early on as both sections linked up superbly to give Bec a torrid time both in defence and attack. As the Croydon attack set up chance after chance, putting away goal after goal - their defence equally defended and frustrated their opposition to the point that they found it difficult to take a shot let alone score a goal. In fact it wasn't until most of the half had expired before Bec had managed to register a goal in response to Croydon's 8 baskets and when half time finally arrived; it was the home side who had a commanding 12-2 lead at the break.

With instructions to continue working hard and put pressure on their opponents, Croydon 2 returned to the pitch full of optimism that they would earn their 4th win of the season. Having been told not to switch off, there was a brief moment of irritation for coach Boys on the sideline as that was exactly what the blues did as the whistle stated the half - Bec made a smart move down the right side and within two passes claimed the first goal of the half.

One may have worried at this point that a second half comeback was on, however, with the team showing a determined effort and besting their yellow counterparts they emerged triumphant in the second half to add to the first. Every player could come off the pitch feeling more than happy with their collective and individual efforts on the day.

Jeanes demonstrated she hasn't lost it as she ran her girl ragged, Mills duely put away resulting penalties and his own chances and Hudpsith showed her class with 5 of her own... I could mention every single player for their performance, they were all so good! Janine Bovey replaced Jeanes with 10 minutes remaining as the home side added gloss to a wonderful result.

By the time the full time whistle sounded, a very happy and tired Croydon side had run out clear winners with a 12 goal advantage to boast. Revenge for their early season reversal well and truly claimed, 20-8 the final result.

Croydon 3 claim the spoils in battle with Supernova 3

Croydon 3's first match of 2016 welcomed Supernova 3 to a snowy (slushy) Royal Russell. CKC3 lined up with Steve Wright, Craig Stevens, Kay and Ellen Swygart in attack. Defence consisted of Andy Withers, Dom Bradford (Capt), Julia Johnson, and Zoe Shewell.

Advice from the Captain before the match was to focus on defence and work on conceding as few goals as possible, whilst scoring more than conceding of course! Steve got the ball rolling with a long shot, but Supernova quickly claimed one back with a runner from one of their girls. 1-1 each, all change. The remainder of the first half saw each side finding the basket, but neither were able to pull too far ahead. The half time whistle came with Supernova leading 6-5.

The second half saw the same level of intensity and contest as the first, as each side battled to dominate the collect and feed positions, chasing down loose balls, and generally battling hard to retain possession. CKC got off the mark first to claim the first goal and bring the scores level at 6-6. From then on both teams fought to add to the scoreboard but defences appeared to dominate, with a period of stalemate where neither side was able to claim a goal. Thankfully CKC's hard work and persistence paid off, finding the korf and securing a lead with a sufficient cushion. Supernova mounted a brief come back, but CKC's strong 2nd-half efforts ensured victory as the final whilst blew. Final score CKC 12 - 9 Supernova.

Well played all, and thank you to the Swygarts for seamlessly slotting in to the team. MVP goes to Steve for his consistently strong collects and goal scoring, including some cheeky one-handers under the post.

Croydon 4 secure another win

Croydon 4 continued their good start to the new year with a competent win against Highbury 4. The starting line up had only 3 of the players who beat Supanova last week with most of the rest having been poached...I mean having gone on to higher things. Mark Birch made an appearance against his favourite team, having scored in every game he has played against them.

So first attach was Mark, Karen, Dawn and Jon with Mollie, Hannah , Bryan and Tom in first defence. It was probably about half way through the first half that the ref awarded the first of several penalties and Jon obligingly stepped up the mark and missed but just to make sure he stepped over the line as well. Thankfully he was able to redeem himself a little later with another penalty which set Croydon on the way to a lead of 5-0 at half time.

At the start of the second half Highbury pegged a couple back but Croydon then went on to match them goal for goal to ultimately win 9-5 of which at least 3 were penalties.

There was lots to commend in the game with shots coming from a variety of moves and invariably the ball was recycled for a further attempt. The ball rattled the basket on almost every attempt but often wasn't quite good enough to drop. Defensively, both ends did exceptionally well and regularly intercepted . However, towards the end of the game a few unforced errors crept in and sometime it was just a bit too frantic. As always it would be good if the ends could stay together week by week so as to learn each others style of play.

Next week-the crunch game!

(Thanks to Karen, Mark and Mollie for stepping in to help out this week!)

Swans flip reverse score to take revenge on Bec 4

After narrowly losing 8-7 in a previous away match to Bec, the Swans were determined to clinch a much needed win at their home ground. Galloway, Green, Walsh and Champion started in attack, while White, Smith, Sturgess and Kelly were in defence. The Swans started strong with Walsh running his player and just missing a shot which was fed beautifully by Green. The ball was turned over quickly and despite missing a long shot, Bec scored from the rebound off a shot from a free pass. Galloway responded immediately with a shot from 3 metres evening up the scoreboard. However, Bec were on fire as they sunk another one within seconds, bringing the score to 2-1.

Very much like a game of ping pong, the ball kept going from half to half. Both teams had high energy, which, to Becs disadvantage resulted in them giving a penalty away. Unfortunately for The Swans, White crossed the line (literally), resulting in his goal being disallowed.

The Swans didn't let this phase them though and both Smith and Walsh sunk long shots, with Walsh taking his from the half way line. With a long shot from Bec in between, Champion followed suit and fought off some tough defence to make the score 4-3.

A few minutes later, White had the chance to redeem himself and sunk a beautiful penalty. 5-3 to The Swans. (good feet Rog).

The remainder of the first half consisted of excellent defence from both teams, with the ball spending less time in each half than McDanell spent as top scorer for The Swans this season.

In the second half, McDanell came on for Kelly who shone in defence from the start and The Swans got straight back into the game with Walsh scoring a runner off Galloway's feed. Unfortunately this drive from the team in blue was short lived as Bec sunk 3 goals in a row, one from a penalty. Galloway managed to gain a free pass back for The Swans, but the section weren't quite quick enough off the mark.

It was the girls turn to shine as Green sunk a beautiful goal from the post, quickly followed by Galloway, who's was unfortunately defended - 7-6. After many more attempts at goal from both teams, Bec managed to get one in, but Smith just managed to defend it in time.

As it grew closer to the end, Bec managed to equalise despite White and Smith switching opponents to prevent it...a nail biting moment for The Swans. Luckily, Smith was quick to respond with a runner to take the score to 8-7 (sound familiar?) with a lovely feed from Sturgess.

A very competitive and closely fought match. Both teams played brilliantly with MVP going to Galloway, who fought hard in both attack and defence, and scored two goals (despite one being defended). Thanks to Nigel for a superb refereeing performance and Adam for playing.
