Croydon 1 dominate Mitcham in goals galore!

Croydon 1 travelled to Dulwich for an early match fixture against lower table Mitcham 1. Regardless of position Croydon were hungry for a win.. A big win (for Nigel!)

James, D.Pratt, Bradford and Jeanes started in first attack working well as a section keeping the ball moving at a very fast pace. James slotted in a long shot followed quickly by a mid range from Jeanes to take the visitors 2-0 up. Next up in attack saw Withers slot in a nice shot from the side followed by a long shot from Codd. Croydon's momentum was on the up with plenty of shots going up and some great rebounding from both ends. Back in attack James was fouled and awarded a free throw which went just over the post to which Pratt didn't hesitate to pick up and bag the goal. Bradford made a blinding long pass to James who flicked on to Pratt who flicked in a one handed runner. Codd back on the scoreboard with a runner with the defence solid putting mega pressure on the home side until they was buzzed out by the shot clock. Hudspith was next up to slot away a long shot followed by a change in ends and James scoring his second of the game from the half way line! 20 minutes in and the visitors were showing they meant business leading 8-0. Sensing they could be in trouble, Mitcham called a time out to which they returned with their first goal of the game, Hudspith replied. Elliot made a few cheeky turn in feeds to create good chances but they just wouldn't topple in! Mitcham were awarded a penalty and missed but soon replied with their second of the game in the next attack to take the half time score to 13-2.

Croydon started the second half with a beauty of a pass from Anna at the half way line in to James to bag the first of the second half followed by another short one from James. Nigel was fouled when the sections switched ends and cooly converted his penalty. Goals then followed from Withers, Pratt, Elliot and a free throw goal from Codd- the home side replied only with one.
Next up was a Downtowner from Jeanes and she wasent finished there.. A change of ends saw Mitcham pick up the pace in a panic to get a shot up and BLAM!! From Jeanes! Hudspith on fire popped in another long shot followed by a runner from James and two in return from the home side. Hudspith stepped up to convert his second pen of the game followed by a lovely drop off from Withers. Bradford and Jeanes worked hard to keep their girls on their toes attacking them from all angles until Bradford was awarded a pen got a foul on her runner- Pratt converted no problem. The defense were solid taking their opponents to the shot clock buzzer for the 5th time in the game! James converted a free throw replied by Mitcham for one.
The pace of the game extremely high, the opposition were handing out the fouls to which Pratt converted his second pen of the game. The home side not happy bagged one only for Withers to casually pop one in from 7 metres! Pratt again with his 3rd and final pen of the game- easily converted, again the home side returned with a goal determined to peg some back. Croydon called a time out to which Ellis and B.Pratt pushed the team to keep the home side to under 10 goals and keep pushing for the impressive 30 goals which was nearing!! 10 minutes to go saw Hudspith with a drop off, Jeanes with a perfect turn in feed goal and Pratt launching a long pass to James to bag in the net. Mitcham bagged their last goal of the game with Croydon pushing beyond the 30 goals with a runner from Elliot, a final drop off from James and a runner from Codd. Final whistle blew and A well worked Croydon 1 were delighted with the well deserved 33(32)-9.

The Game was fast paced and well worked for but it was simple enjoyable Korfball and a great win in the bag for the team. Well done the firsts for breaking the 30 goals in a game to be the second highest score any Croydon team have scored in over 13 years!! Well done to all!!

Croydon 2 just fall short of fiesty Bec 2

Croydon 2 faced the last fixture of the day against Bec 2 at Royal Russell. The first few minutes of the game saw both teams battling hard and putting in solid defences. It was the away team who first scored, but Croydon soon replied as Ellen was fouled on her shot and awarded a penalty. Stephen stepped up to the mark and coverted no problem to take the teams to one a piece. Vernon had a solid game in defence intercepting Bec's passes in to the feeds but it was the away team who took the next 2 goals. Determined to not let the Bec run away with a lead, the attack worked well to create chances. A long shot from Ellen narrowly missed just over the top to which Kay picked up converted a drop off from the back. The home side still dominating this attack set up wide with Ellen in the assist, Steven charged past his player to receive a reverse bounce pass from Ellen- Goal! Croydon then took the lead for the first time in the game with a downtown shot from Simon. 20 minutes in Dom came on for Ed who was happy to see his asthma pump after his usual fast paced efforts on the court with some great rebounding! Bec replied with a goal to then be pushed behind again from a great runner from Stephen. The away team then replied yet again(as most of the game went!) Dom stepped up to even the scores again with a sneaky drop off. Half time 6-6. A half time team talk went in Bec's favour as they came back on the court fighting and winning the next 2 goals. Captain Mills wasent happy with this and from one pass into play he popped a shot from near the half way line which sunk into the basket. Both teams at this point were hungry for the goals and hungry for the win and were giving it their all! Bec were awarded a penalty which took them now 3 goals ahead. A quick team talk soon kept the calm and pushed hope into the players that the game was still open to win. Sarah who was attacking from all angles was then fouled on her shot and awarded a penalty- Croydon's Captain converted. This was followed by a long shot from Vernon. 9-10 in Bec's favour but all very much still to play for. The Away team then made a substitution in the form of the very experienced Stu Ironmonger and managed to pull one more ahead (9-11). Croydon's attack rushed into play and Simon confidently sunk another long shot. With 5 minutes to play there was only 1 in it!! Stephen did fantastic in defence keeping Ironmonger goalless but they unfortunately managed to put a further 2 goals away in the dying minutes. Stephen then sunk his and Croydon's last goal of the game with Bec scoring the remaining 2 goals in the last minute.

Unfortunately the game was lost in the last couple of minutes but the team should be proud of a hard well fought battle to keep the game neck in neck throughout and great for the spectators!

Croydon 3 comeback against Mitcham, even with one short

Not a great start for the third team as the hall was locked! But the team got in eventually well 7 players did and what players. They needed to step up and step up they did.

One section of Dom back with Kerry and always needing some young blood Alex and yes that was brave as they had to be a section of 3! Leaving the other section of Mark and Vicky to partner with Martin (again standing in at the last minute, thank you and Sam for releasing you from plastering to playing) and new to team Laura who after training with Mark should happily settle into the section.

What a game!?! this is all I can say as I wasn't there but they used energy, didnt argue just got down and played with the best result possible, a WIN!!! yeah well done folks, lets have a repeat next week please x

Frustrating end to 2014 for Swans

Injuries and other commitments meant that the Swans team that travelled to Trinity this weekend was a new look side. Following a close encounter against Trojans a few weeks ago Swans felt more than capable of ending 2014 on a high and acting some revenge on the English champions third string. Coach Walsh felt that Trojans looked stronger in the girl department so when they set out first he made sure that Sturgess marked Palfreyman and Palmer took the physical Simms. This left an attacking section of Smith, Dean, McDanell and Kelly. Swans started well and when Kelly went close twice in the first three minutes it looked as though it might be Swans day. Dean, who kindly stepped in for the injured Walsh opened the scoring when Smith showed great vision to pick him out only for Dean to slot home from 3 metres. White’s section were dominating in defence but they could only do so much, a stray pass fell to a Trojans player who scored against the run of play to make it 1-1.
All change and step up Yearwood who was making his season’s debut and looked like he had never been away. He faked the shot then found Sturgess in the feed who returned the ball allowing Yearwood to convert. 1-2 soon became 1-3 when White showed great composure to shoot and score from 4 metres. Unfortunately Walsh got team selection wrong and while Smith, Dean, Kelly and McDanell all played well individually they didn’t gel as a section. Again they huffed and puffed but the ball wouldn’t drop. Whites section stood firm once again but Leah Palfreyman buried nicely to go in at half time 2-3.
Swans started the second half in the same way as the first and it was once again stand in Dean who got the scoring underway; this time from even further out. With the score now at 2-4 a betting man would have backed the Swans to pull away. Unfortunately this was not to be the case. Green and Galloway replaced Kelly and McDanell and while they worked just as hard they also struggled to settle in a section that had never played together before. Goodridge and Steve Palfreyman took the game by the scruff of the neck and with 4 unanswered goals between them it was now Trojans in poll position. The momentum shifted and some contentious decisions coupled with a missed penalty confirmed that it was not to be seven Swans swimming this Christmas. White scored a constellation runner to make it 6-5 before the final whistle blew to bring an end to easily the worst Swans performance for a very long time. MVP went to Dean for two goals and making a big effort to help a sister club. Few positives to be taken however the league is hugely competitive this season and all teams are capable of dropping points so Swans will start 2015 looking for a top two finish.
