Hard fought victory for Croydon 4 although already won!

After much discussion regarding the eligibility of the Croydon 4 team it all proved in vain as Nomads were unable to field a legal side. With a 0-10 win in the bag it was Dom who struck first slotting away a penalty to make it 0-1. Another penalty scored by Dom for 0-2 before goal machine and referee, Dom over committed on a free pass which was cooly converted for 1-2. Croydon 4 are yet to field the same team week on week so far this season and this was evident as a scrappy first half was brought to a close with only 3 goals.

Wise words from Ian at half time and from Steve during the second half saw a far more structured Croydon in the second half. The boys took on the task of controlling this post at each end and the girls took on a more attacking role. Jess grew in confidence and when David found a good feed position she was able to veer and score for 1-3. Lol's penalty made it 2-3 before Jocelyn buried nicely from 4 metres. A 4 metre shot and a nice drop off saw the scores level at 4-4. Joce found a good feed for Dom to convert an unorthodox but effective runner to take it to 4-5.
A Dom penalty saw Croydon regain a 2 goal lead before a well worked move saw Nomads take the score to 5-6. The final goal went to David as he picked up the rebound from a good distance shot from Amy much to the applauds of the Croydon crowd who clearly felt David deserved a goal for his hard unselfish work. It's always an enjoyable encounter against Nomads and today was no different. Good result!

Thanks Ben but I feel I must add that Katie had a great first game within the Croydon family and worked hard taking some good opportunities to shoot. Thanks to Ian, Dom, and Jocelyn for helping out. In my section with Jess, Amy and Craig I must admit it was the first time that I felt that we played as an effective section supporting and opening up space for each other again from ideas fed in from the side line. The time that our supporters give me and the rest of the 4th team is very much appreciated and with a receptive section play evolved and worked well for each other.

Last bit of trivia David scored his 50th goal at his 50th match

Honours even (5-5 again!!) for Croydon 5 in a hard-fought draw

With only a seven player team being fielded by Croydon 5, our initial thoughts were that we might find ourselves under too much pressure.

In first defence were Bryan, Tom, Hannah and Emily. This left Alex, Adam and Kerry in Croydon's first attack, against their four defenders. Obviously not an easy task.

Right from the starting whistle, however, we found that our defensive section was able to effectively subdue their offence, whilst our offence created a number of chances in attack to test Highbury's defences.

Both teams got into their attacking stride quickly, but both defences kept the attacking sections limited to only a few shots on target. Highbury's defensive approach was to play very tight, in some cases too tight, as at least one Highbury player was spoken to by the referee for pushing or barging.

Play switched quickly from one end of the pitch to the other, as each team tried time and again to score their first point.

In the end it was our Alex who scored first, after about 10 minutes of fairly hectic end to end play, with a very well worked long shot from the side. It took Highbury several more minutes to find a response, and this only came courtesy of a Penalty. Play continued at a brisk pace at both ends until nearly 20 minutes into the game Bryan scored our second goal, again a fairly long shot from the corner of the pitch.

Half time was blown with the score 2-1 to Croydon. Given Highbury's physical approach, and the intensity with which the game was being played, both in attack and defence, this half-time scoreline was an excellent achievement.

A quick team talk was given, encouraging the whole team to play the second half as well as we had done in the first, and Adam also imparted some of his newly acquired 2nd team experience to help us overcome some of Highbury's defensive tactics.

The second half was started, and as had been requested, the whole team repeated their first half performance, giving everything they had to keep Highbury contained and Croydon scoring. Indeed, in the second half our defensive efforts were even better than the first, with numerous attacks being quickly overturned and passes intercepted.

Possibly against the general run of play Highbury then scored again; 2-2. Adam (who as our guest player had been holding back his attacking abilities slightly until our team had points on the board) began to push his attacking section harder, and was rewarded with another excellent goal, our third. 3-2 Croydon.

Both teams upped their work rate through the second half and Highbury were next to score; 3-3. Bryan quickly responded with his second goal, another well worked long drop-off shot. 4-3. Highbury replied again to make it 4-4. The three players in Adam's section were all working extremely well in attack against their four defenders, and it was Adam again who found the scoresheet with his second of the game, a well-timed running in shot.

With only five minutes remaining we thought we might be able to hold onto this fragile lead, but it was not to be as Highbury then scored their fifth goal of the match to even the scoreline.

The game was played to the end with the same hectic pace, and despite several more attempts on goal by both teams (including an almost last-second 10m shot from Bryan that bounced into the hoop but unfortunately straight back out again), the game finished five apiece.

I must congratulate everyone who played for us today for their stirling efforts, both in attack but more importantly in defense. A 'very well done' to all concerned.

MVP today is Adam; for the two goals he scored, his help in his three-person section, and his team talk advice at half time. Thanks Adam.

Swans lacked killer punch against Trojans 3

The Swans played their second game of the season at their home ground of Royal Russell against Trojans 3. With Ben, Simon, Jocelyn and Harriet starting in attack and Roger, Joe, Emma and Lindsey taking up position in defence.
The match was off to a promising start when Joc took up at great feed position which Ben was able to score from in the opening minute, this was later followed with another runner from Ben from Harriet's feed. With the game at 2-0 within the first 5 minutes Trojans fought back with a long shot making the score 2-1. The swans battled hard in defence to win back the ball and their efforts were not in vain as a far out feed from Emma allowed Joe to bury a one of his trade mark one handed long shots from 3m. Trojans fought back with another goal, however the swans were on a role and a rebound from Ben closely followed by a 4m long shot from Roger made the score 5-2.
Trojans fought hard to get 2 more goals and when the score became 5-4 it became clear the game was far from won. A great shot from Simon and Rogers rebound from Joe's shot allowed the Swans to keep the lead 7-4, however 2 runners from the Trojan girls and a long shot evened the score to 7-7. Another long shot from Trojans ended the first half at 8-7 to Trojans.

The half term chat by Ben prompted the Swans to work on ensuring there was a collect at the post and also highlighted the importance for communication within the sections, Clare was also subbed on for Lindsey.

The 2nd half got off to a great start with a 4m shot from Rog and a long shot from Ben making the score 9-9. Jess then came on for Harriet. Joc got an excellent feed allowing Ben to bury a long shot. Another goal and a penalty for Trojans made the score 11-10 to Trojans before Amy was subbed on for Joc. A collect by Jess popped out to Ben allowed the teams to equalise on 11 all. However 2 more goals from Trojans saw the game running away from the Swans. Amy later provided a good feed feed postion for Ben to bring the score back to just one away from Trojans. However a free pass awarded to Trojans resulted in a goal, a last running in shot from Roger ended the game 14-13 to Trojans.

Joc took MVP for her great positioning in both the feed and collect. The boys worked hard in attack and Lindsey, Clare, and Emma also battled hard in defence winning some great collects. Many thanks to Dom for refereeing the match. A frustrating but well played game from the swans against a great opposition.
