Croydon 2 finish stronger to beat experienced Nomads team

Croydon 2 took to the game against Nomads expecting a difficult challenge-and they got one! The Nomads team was very experienced and Croydon put Vernon, Pete, Beckie and Hannah in first attack. Dom, Simon, Kathy and Julia were first in defence. The first half was pretty even with Nomads going in at the break 10-9 up. Croydon rode their luck a bit in the first half but were rejuvenated after the break. Croydon were a bit wasteful to start, but a well timed substitution saw Ed come on for Simon with the scores at 13-15 to Nomads. Croydon then controlled the game and had the momentum they needed to sprint over the finish line and end up 19-16 winners. There were lots of positives from the game, with all playing well in different phases of the game. Still work to be done on shot selections and communication but a good base to build on.
A great win-well done!!!

Croydon Swans register first proper league win of the season.

On the back of a narrow defeat to Mitcham and a well fought draw against Highbury last week the Swans faced Nomads 6 full of confidence. It was the strongest squad Swans have been able to field so far this season and this became evident right from the start. Swans have been working hard in training and the focus has been on moving the ball round the post in order to manoeuvre players in to good feed and collect positions. Ben urged the side to vary their attacks in terms of shooting from distance and running their players as he felt that keeping the experienced opposition on their toes would be the secret to Swan success. The game went according to plan as the Swans took an early 2-0 lead; Emma passed to Ben for him to score from 3 metres then he returned the favour when he fed for Emma to score a well executed running in shot.

Ends changed and the other four looked equally as comfortable in attack. Michael and Jess moved well in order to create space and Rog put his shots up with confidence knowing that Amy was dominating her much taller opponent in the rebound position. During one attack the Swans recycled the ball four times with Amy collecting on three occasions. Nomads pulled one back when Peter Allen converted a penalty but Swans advanced their lead when Roger dispatched a one handed runner after a well crafted feed from Michael. At the other end Ben had found his range and Georgie and Wendy moved well to create scoring opportunities. Tom passed to Ben who scored one from 4 metres before winning a penalty which Swans failed to convert. Shortly after, Emma took up a good feed position once again and assisted Ben in scoring a runner to make the score 5-1 at half time.

Thanks must go to Steve and Kim who came along to coach from the sidelines. They offered some advice and encouraged Swans to pass and move. The side have a tendency of passing or shooting then standing and watching. With this thought in mind the Swans started the second half brightly and extended their lead to 7 -1 with The Swans Roger scoring twice from around the 3 metre mark. Another penalty, this time buried by Lol More, saw the score go 7-2 but a further runner by Ben and a well deserved goal from Michael took the score to 9-2 and ended the game as a contest. The Swans lost focus towards the end of the game and Mary Allen capitalised, scoring twice in quick succession before Jocelyn finished tidily from 4 meters wrapping up a convincing 10-4 victory.

Special thanks have to go to Kim and Steve for coming to coach from the sidelines and to Aoife for coming along to support us and becoming our number 1 fan in Ireland. Michael was very close to MVP due to stepping in at the last minute despite not being ‘fully fit’ to play however, McD took that accolade showing commitment and making it back from Watford in time for the game and dominating her girl in collect position. A few sloppy penalties given away and a few penalties missed but other than that the Swans should be very proud of their performance today.
