Croydon blown away by Tornadoes

Croydon travelled to Medway park for a game that they had high hopes for. However, the less said about this game perhaps the better. Tornadoes young team shot very well all game, and Croydon never got out of the blocks. Lets just call it one of those days ...

Croydon 2 come close to an upset, but not close enough

A mix and match second team took on an experienced looking Highbury in the morning at Royal Russell on Sunday. The sections comprised of Jane Hudspith, Dom Bradford, Ed Chaney (c) and Sarah Hole in first attack; leaving Kathy Bradford, Julia Johnson, Pete Lindsey and Simon Mills taking up defensive duties.

The match started quickly and it was Highbury who were out of the blocks the quicker taking an early lead. The first half would prove to be a tense affair with neither side ever really looking like dominating. After Croydon came back from being behind, the scoreline seemed to seesaw and at the half time whistle it was Croydon who led after a controversial moment. With the scores balanced at 6-6, the ball was played into the Croydon attack and after a lovely move by the attacking side, Highbury were left with a player lying injured on the floor. The referee blew his whistle but Bradford (Dom) took his shot from under the post and scored. Highbury were incensed as the referee gave the goal before ending the half.

Croydon were not ready for the response as the second half got underway, Highbury got off to an even quicker start to bring the scores level again at 7-7, before adding three more goals to give them a comfortable lead and for the first time looking like the team that would go on to win the game. But Croydon were not done and a spirited fightback saw them pull back into contention. With minutes to go Croydon still found themselves 2 down at 15-17. Highbury managed to hold out and with no more goals Croydon, despite a fine performance, we're on the wrong end of the result.

Considering the blend of players from accross the teams and some players playing their first season in the LRL, it was a good ad spirited performance from Croydon 2. Bradford (D.) played a good game, Johnson bested her player on numerous occasions and Mills scored a personal best of 7 goals. It was a good team performance and Croydon can take heart from their performance going into the new year.

Energy beats experience

(Supplementary match report'): After a two week residence at Epsom college the Croydon 3 road show took in the delights of Addlestone for a match with Woking.
Warm up started badly as only a basketball could be found for practice and that Mark had to fit into a ladies odd numbered shirt which he enjoyed more than he should.
A korfball was borrowed and sections decided upon witha unique situation of four couples in play.
Micky (mark and vicky) teamed up with Wendger (wendy and roger) with Bemma and Martam (martin and sam) in first attack.
Croydon started well with goals for Sam on her debut as Mark wrestled with the experienced Simon, henceforth known as the Grumposaurus.
Croydon were in the ascendance with a steady flow of goals but more importantly holding woking to 1 in the first half. It ended 4:1. Croydon sensed an unlikely victory.
Vicky chipped in with a long shot but woking were not to be defeated with the grumposaurus fiendishly barging the brave mark to the floor.
Woking scored quick goals but in the pivotal 5 minutes of the game Martin stepped up with two long shots of the highest quality as a cunning move from Micky left the grumposaurus dejected and beaten.
In the end it was the defence of blossom house posse that won it as they all turned in a performance beyond their tender years.
The final score of 7:5 was testament to a job well done, everyone enjoyed themselves and as thoughts turned to the christmas festivities as did ours of upcoming home ties and loose fitting shirts.
It really was a team MVP performance but for a stunning debut i would have to nominate Sam with mentions in dispatches for Martin, the blossoms and Vicky.
Well done team, bring on 2013.

Without a ball and I think missing a boys top the thirds took on Woking. The sections were 1st attack (I think) Martin, his girlfriend Sam with Ben and Emma leaving defense of Mark and Vicki with Roger and Wendy! I could be wrong but think this was basketball Sam's first game and only second CKC game for Roger and Wendy!!

I need not have worried as they were all fabulous!! Sam scored the first two, Mark was marking his player out of the game and managed to score himself, Martin not to be out-done by Sam scored 3 so to keep the couple scoring theme going Vicki got in on the act!

The headline was 'energy beats experience' as I think there was more energy than experienced players on the pitch but imagine what Steve and Paul could do with those players....

Hope you all enjoyed the game MPV to Mark but heard it could easily have been Martin

Merry Christmas to you all x

Fluctuating game ends all square between Croydon 4 and Highbury 3

Croydon 4 rounded off the year with an exciting game against Highbury 3, who they had already beaten this year. First attack were Mike, Kerry, David and Beccy, with Jon, Charlotte, Laura and Jonathan in defence. Croydon started brightly but the omens were bad when Laura turned awkwardly and did her achiles and had to be carried off. Sarah (H) was still around so she came on to play her second game of the afternoon.

Highbury scored first but Mike soon replied and then Charlotte came steaming in for a well executed running in shot. Jon then got one from the touchline directly behind the basket and then Mike got his second and Kerry slotted one from about 2m under pressure. Croydon were on a roll when David scored to take it to 6-2 but Highbury pegged it back to 6-5 before Jon rounded off the half to turn and score from the feed position.

In the second half Phil replaced Jon and Croydon had long periods of possession which they couldn't translate into goals. Meanwhile Highbury pegged it back to lead 8-7 before Phil got off the mark from distance and Beccy got a running in shot to restore the lead at 9-8. But Croydon couldn't hold it and conceded 2 more, one a penalty, to trail 10-9, before Phil restored the balance near the end.

Great performances all round particularly as this was just the second game for Jonathan, Kerry and Mike, as well as Laura of course. As a post script she now has her leg plastered but is 'hopping' to play again in the new year-it must be the Christmas cracker season!!
