Croydon 1 couldn't score against Norwich Knights

Croydon travelled to the delightful (!) CNS school hall to play in this important match. The floor was concrete and unforgiving, and compared to RR the playing area was narrow, with spectators practically on the field of play.

Croydon started with Omar in first defence, with Jeanes, Codd (nee Stimpson), and Ellis. First attack was Driver, Johnson, Mills and Chaney.

Croydon were slow to start and seemed to struggle with the tight defence of Knights. There were some good through balls, and some drop offs, but the Londeners couldn't get the ball in the basket, and Knights punished them by scoring their's..

It didn't help the Croydon cause that despite pre-match reminders that Knights would be looking for penalties, their strategies worked and Croydon gave away 6.

In the second half there was more flowing Korfball from Croydon, but the goals still didn't fall, and Knights were on a roll. Sloppy passes into attack gifted the Norfolk team more than one goal as defenders were left out of position. This is something that Croydon will need to tighten up on if they are to make any progress this season.

Croydon have plenty to work on, but it's the start of the season and there are glimpses of what this team is really capable of achieving.

Croydon 3 beat Nomads 4 at home

Another home game for Croydon 3 and another line up. Starting in attack was Beccy, Martin, Pete and Sarah - Beccy had just played the whole of the 4th game against a very experienced Mitcham so I thought she could work at her pace, especially as she was injured near the end of the 4th game! Therefore defence was Human, Mark, Vicki and myself.

So the first goal I do remember as I let in really! think I got the collect then did a sloppy pass out of defense to let wise Reg to swoop it up and score, boo hoo. I do have notes of who scored what as Jon kindly wrote down the score keeping Ben and Emma company who also nicely stayed to watch. Ray also stayed supporting with two women who know they can join in too if they wish! So back to the game, the first half we were evenly matched with goals for goals, Human and Martin from long range, Sarah behind the post and myself two run ins with a stop as too much running is bad!

The half time talk was to carry on as we were going. I do believe Pete said 'its the easy shots we're scoring so keep it simple and be close.' He obviously doesnt take his own advice as being in attack he throws up and scores a long shot from the side, then in the next attack from the front at the line scores again! Not to be outdone Human thought I can do that too then Vicki who did listen scored from under the basket. Sarah then scored close and far thus proving she can score from any distance!

The starting attack then gave away another penalty but by then the game was ours. Maybe the experienced Nomads players were getting tired but they were working with the young players they had which will pay off in the long run... Sorry that I didnt realise Mark and Beccy hadnt scored or else I would've put pressure on them to be main attackers to get a goal! We played well, not in kit as I thought it was being left in the hall for us, but the bibs did us well. Good job and well played by all x

Croydon improve dramatically in the second half against experienced opposition

Croydon 4 entertained an experienced Mitcham 2 on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The new look Croydon included Ben And Emma from Blossom House school savouring their last few hours of half term, joined by fellow teacher Beccy (at an hours notice) and seasoned campaigner David. At the other end were Charlotte, Julie and Jon, joined later by Ray, who ghosted in from a Halloween party in Kettering!

Mitcham soon got underway and by the time David responded with a penalty (over-arm style) the score was 5-1. Later Jon added a second from short range but by this time Mitcham had advanced to 13.

The first half was out of sight but Croydon bounced out for the second half. They defended well and attacked frequently, occasionally getting a series of collects to keep the attack going. Lots of opportunities were created but only a few went in. Julie scored with a running in shot and Ray scored his firat for the club from short range. At the other end David got his second, as did Jon from behind the basket , after several near misses. The end result was 7-4 to Mitcham, unless of course you count the first half.
So many thanks to Ben and Emma for their first outing (of many?), Ray, Charlotte (who brought her own fan club) Julie, David and especially Beccy whose performance later for the thirds showed she hadn't burnt herself out. Lots of encouraging signs for the next game which sadly is 3 weeks away. well done everyone.
