Superior Shooting Lands Nomads Victory

Croydon 2 travelled to Epsom to face Nomads 3 in their last game of the season. Croydon knew before the game that the result could not alter their league position, but were still looking for a good performance to gather momentum for a probable playoff match on May 13th.

Despite a strong looking line up, both Croydon sections struggled to find their rhythm early on. When Croydon did create good openings the final shot was often lacking. At the other end Nomads scored at a slow but consistent rate and moved into a 4-1 lead. As the half drew to a close Croydon did finally manage to find the bottom of the basket, with Driver slotting from range twice, and managed to go in at half time 5-5.

From here Croydon should have gone on to close the game out. However, Croydon continued to struggle to score from the many opportunities they created, and Nomads again applied the pressure at the other end with a regular supply of their own goals. As the half wore on Croydon’s passing in particular was poor, and Nomads used the small hall well to suffocate Croydon’s attacks. The deciding factor in the end was shooting accuracy, as Nomads hit several long shots to Croydon’s few. A rare long effort, again from Driver, and two penalties from Wright kept Croydon within touching distance, but it was not enough as Nomads closed the game out 12-10. A final mention for MOTM Champion who put in a captains performance with energy and alertness at both ends. If the rest of the team follow suit in the playoff then Croydon 2 will have no problems whoever their opponents.

Croydon round off season with narrow defeat

Croydon 4 took on Mitcham 3 in the last game of the season but unfortunately the result transposed the team numbers! This was a game which Croydon could and would have won but for putting their 2 most experienced players against an end of only 3 (although this was of course Mitcham's choice).
Croydon had Jon Dean, Adam Dack, Angie Newton and newcomer Jane Belfourd in first attack with David Hughes, Charlotte Feakins, Julia Green and newcomer Euan Knight in defence. Predictably Croydon raced to a one nil lead thanks to Jane which, as it turned out, effectively meant she couldn't shoot for the rest of the game. Meanwhile Jon had no defender and so couldn't shoot either. Mind you it did get round the problem of winning the collect which Croydon have been plagued with all season.
Mitcham equalised and then went ahead but then Adam popped in a classic running in shot which didn't even hit the sides. So at half time it was 2 each.
Lots of shot bobbled around the basket in the second half and David squeezed one in to make it 3-2 but Mitcham soon equalized and then went ahead to make it 4-3. Despite great efforts Croydon just could not get that equalizer and thats the way it finished.
The paucity of goals underlines the excellent defence that the whole team displayed but as often before this season the shots just would not go in the basket. But this is a very new team. 3 of its number have just finished their first season and for Euan it was his first game so there are lots of grounds for optimism. What we do know is that the whole team have worked really hard for each other and have never given up. Well done
