Croydon 1 out scored but not out played by KV

Croydon 1 travelled to Kent to take on KV in the spacious Medway Sports Park. Captain Zak Omar teamed up in first defence with Vernon Ellis, Jane Belfourd and Susan Baker, whilst first attack saw Andy Withers, Ed Chaney, Grace Stimpson and Anna Jeanes.

KV were disciplined and clearly working to a very controlled, set plan. They drew a free pass to score their first goal, but they then missed a penalty to give the Croydon team a small breather. The Croydon attack was struggling to find the right distance to take their shots and were giving the ball away too easily, leading to their defence having to work twice as hard to protect the basket. It wasn't for long though, as KV made up for the earlier miss with a classic fade away shot from close-to. With the change of ends, the new KV attack showed they could also shoot, with a long range effort sailing through the basket. However Omar put the Blues onto the score sheet at 3-1 with a cheeky short shot.

The remainder of the half saw KV stay in the lead but Croydon were always within a few goals of them. Jeanes scored a free throw, Omar and Baker scored from distance, and Stimpson scored a great drop off the back but two penalties just before half time gave KV a 4 goal lead, at 9-5.

Croydon were unlucky at the start of the 2nd half, with the ref giving a free pass and a penalty which KV scored. Indeed Croydon seemed to suffer at the hands of the ref for much of this match but the hosts then made their own luck with two goals from distance, to put them 8 goals up inside only 4 minutes.

Croydon players didn't give up though, and there were some windows of good play, as the defence worked out the KV game play and forced the opposition team to change tactics. In attack, Ellis found his distance to score from way out, and Belfourd created the space for a long shot, as well as scoring a sneaky turn in the feed. Good interplay between Stimpson and Jeanes led to the latter scoring from distance, and Omar dropped off to score his 3rd from open play. He also coolly converted 2 penalties to add to his tally.

Towards the end of the game, the visitors had closed to within 4 goals as KV gave their subs a run-out but KV were able to pull ahead despite some of their traditionally high scoring players being kept quiet, notably by Chaney and Ellis (marking Martinez and McDonald respectively).

The final score ended 20-12, which was somewhat flattering to the opposition. Croydon played well, but weren't as sharp and disciplined as they could have been. There is certainly work to be done, but there is potential to work with.

Croydon 4 just undershoot Supernova

Croydon 4 kicked off the new year (so to speak) with a home game for once. Jon, Stephen (G), Julie and Charlotte started off with Sarah(H), David, Phil and Angie defending. It soon looked like a low scoring game with the familiar problem of lots of shots hitting the Supernova basket but none going in. Supernova scored first but Phil came to the rescue with a goal so memorable that I cannot remember it. Croydon slipped behind again but were still making chances and Julie eventually pegged one back with a sharp shot from behind the basket, her first goal for the club. Half time 2 all.

With Paul's advice ringing in their ears Croydon atarted the second half promisingly and Charlotte managed to score 3 goals but unfortunately 2 were disallowed for being defended. However Jon managed a running in shot and Phil scored again from distance so half way through the half croydon were 5-4 up. However, while the shots didn't fizzle out the goals did and Supernova stole the game with 2 late goals.

As in previous games there was lots of hard work and enterprise but we have to concentrate on making those shots count. I dare say some readers will have observed football reports with a summary of shots on and off target at the end - a similar approach in korfball would have seen Croydon 4 in another galaxy.
