Croydon 1 take inspiration from the 4ths with goal fest against Bec 3

Croydon 1 were keen to put right their recent loss against Trojans 2 against Bec 3. They were unchanged with Dan Pratt, Ed Chaney, Anna Jeanes and Julia Johnson in attack, Zak Omar (c), Vernon Ellis, Hannah Driver and Grace Stimpson in defence.

The game started with Pratt foxing his player with a fake and short shot but Bec 3 were keen to show they were no pushovers and scored the first of what would be a few middle distance shots in the first half. Stimpson got the hosts back in the lead from the free-pass line*. Driver then drove in (ha bleeding ha) for a 3-1 lead and when Pratt found Chaney with a great pass it was 4-1 after 8 minutes. Omar wanted to get in on the act so he converted Stimpson's penalty and scored a sweet long shot showing perfect balance and execution. Stimpson was caught napping as Bec 3 tried to find a foothold but Chaney's intercept meant Pratt was wide open and he wasn't missing much today. Bec 3's time-out at 7-3 seem to do no good as Omar scored a 2nd penalty, a comfortable runner and then a long shot. Stimpson scored from distance and Pratt scored another around the post and the only consolation for the visitors was Johnson's brutal defending and the resulting penalty. Half time: 12-5.

Croydon have been known to make slow starts to halves. Well not today. Taking inspiration from the Hudspith-Withers goal in the 4ths, Pratt and Jeanes contrived to repeat the act with the 2nd bounce-pass-between-the legs-feed of the day. Sexy korfball indeed. The crowd went wild and stayed wild as when Croydon got the ball back in attack seconds later, Jeanes grabbed it and scored one from distance before Pratt could even get to the post. Bec 3 were long gone by this stage but Croydon weren't letting up, Ellis scored, Stimpson and Chaney got another each and Jeanes scored from distance. 17-6 and another time-out for Bec.

This time-out worked a bit better as Bec 3 fought back with the next 2 goals but Pratt was having one of those games were everything he touched turned to goals. His defender was again embarrassed by more tickery, fakery and tomfoolery under the post and Pratt followed this up with a goal from down-town that was labelled YMCA by the crowd as he kept his skinny arms up for a quite a few minutes after it had gone in.

At this time a new tall sub was brought into the attack. Omar continually fed Driver and Stimpson while Ellis kept the tall boy busy out front. First Driver ran past her girl to give Stimpson a drop off goal, and then Stimpson returned the same favour for Driver to drop into space and score. After some more tricky play resulting in goals from Pratt, Ellis ran past his player twice to score, the second time he introduced the Bec player to his classic 'V' movement to confuse him and score. The final score was a thumping 25-9 and Croydon were stoked by the end. Although this was Bec's 3rd team, they were above Croydon 1 in the league table before this match, and now Croydon will be hoping they can carry this goal-scoring form forward to the other games left this season.

Seriously sexy korfball as Croydon 4 rout Supernova 4

Croydon 4 blew Supernova 4 to bits in what turned out to be a fabulous game to watch, if a little one sided. The team was steeped in experience, welcoming back some familiar faces in Sarah Withers, Nigel Hudspith and Angela Hook to play with captain Jon Dean while at the other end it was Dom Bradford and the star signings from North Downs: Vicky Goode, Susan Wright and Mark Wright. Supernova 4 had one player with experience but otherwise were frankly novices so, against what was surely the strongest Croydon 4 team this century, they were in for a rough time.

And so it proved. And how. Details of who scored what when are a little sketchy (the scoreboard couldn't keep up) but the highlights include a couple of goals from S Wright from balls over the top (one from the other section!), a through the legs feed from Hudspith to a resurgent 6-goal Withers, a runner from Hook (who last played in March 2006!), and 4 from the newly engaged Bradford. It was 10-0 at half time but Supernova at least registered on the scoreboard in the second half with a couple of penalties, and to be fair, their heads didn't go down and they continued to battle despite Croydon 4's total dominance. Roll on next week.
