Croydon's cup run comes to an end

Croydon entertained Mitcham's "youth" team at Royal Russell School in the semi-finals of the BKA Cup. Croydon were missing Anna Jeanes while Mitcham persisted with their U23 side although their bench were ready to step in if required.

Croydon started slowly with Steve Green scoring a brace with ease but were back in the game after a Ross Carr-Taylor penalty. Both sides then failed to score for the next 10 minutes and an early Croydon time-out gave the players a break. Another goal from Carr-Taylor brought the home side level and a long shot from Dean Woods was cancelled out by a Dave Butters effort. Croydon scored the next 3 goals however and took a lead in the match for the first time. This seemed to incense Mitcham and, in a bizarre passage of play, they infringed on a simple Croydon ball out of defence half a dozen times. Referee Bobby Allen's patience was tested and this rash aproach would cost Mitcham later in the match. As the half came to an end, free-passes were traded by both sides and Croydon went into the break 7-5 up.

A drop-off from Sarah George put the hosts further ahead but Woods and Ross Bower were on target to bring Mitcham back into contention. Goals continued to be traded by both teams with neither able to build a lead. A Carly Holness shot put Mitcham 11-13 up but another from George and a penalty from Steve Jones brought parity. The busy crowd were clearly in for a tight finish. Mitcham continued to infringe on Croydon bringing the ball out of defence and Green was rewarded for his efforts with a yellow card. He managed to score before foolishly being sent off for the same offence. Harsh perhaps but Mitcham were repeatedly warned and once Green had vented his fury and eventually left the court John Perrott came on in his stead. Meanwhile Croydon suddenly stopped scoring and at 14-16 down, Croydon brought on Paul Jeanes for Aquino, while Karen Sparrow and Sam Wells entered the fray for Mitcham. Game-winning goals from Bower settled it though and a Jones penalty proved only a late consolation.

For cup-specialists Croydon this was another disappointing loss to Mitcham. In three games this season they have come close to beating their old rivals but have fallen short each time. Mitcham march on and will play Invicta in the final, one hopes they will reward this team with places in the final.

Croydon 2 v Kingfisher 2

The previous encounter between these teams was a somewhat one-sided affair (23-3) and so this game proved. Croydon 2 asked Ross Carr-Taylor to step up in place of Dan Moore and Andy Withers returned in place of Dan Pratt.

The hosts ran riot early on and raced to a 10-0 lead after 8 minutes with a brace from Paul Jeanes and Julia Johnson and a hat-trick from Withers. Kingfisher did manage to trouble the scorers but were unable to contain their hosts and the match was starting to look like a cricket score at half time, 19-4.

Leanna Burney came on for Johnson at half-time and Croydon took the opportunity to work some drills to take more from the game. Burney was soon on the scoresheet after some quality assisting from Carr-Taylor. However the game became scrappy and the scoring dried up somewhat and the visitors were able to come into the game some more. With scoring having come from all Croydon players, a final shot from Withers brought Croydon's tally to 30 with 9 in the "goals against" column.

For Croydon this was little more than a run-about and some of their play showed this but they did try some different tactics and will be pleased with Burney's progress. Kingfisher's young side were never really at the races but will take heart from their 9 goals as they wind they way back to Kent.

West London 1 v Croydon 3

The 3rds travelled to West London to take on a new but quickly improving West London side. For various reasons the normal side was not available so some 4th team regulars deputised admirably. However 12-2 down at half-time the team were up against it. They weathered the storm in the 2nd half with some damage limitation but after a couple of missed penalties, ended up 15-3 losers.
