Croydon claim Champions Trophy Croydon stormed to victory in this season's Champion's Trophy with an unbeaten 4 games winning streak, thus securing their place in the England Korfball League, the top league in the land. Croydon opened up against many commentator's fancied sides, Cambridge City. Despite the tight final scoreline of 11-10, the local side were comfortable for large parts of the game after some great long-shooting from captain Hudspith and it was only the referee's whistle that kept the fenlanders in touch after 4 penalties were awarded, some in curious circumstances. Next up were Birmingham City who had had a bad start with a shock defect to Highbury. Birmingham started well with 2 early goals but Croydon roared back with 4 quick goals. Birmingham were a class outfit though and kept chipping away and again the game ended with only a goal in it at 14-13. That concluded play for the day and Croydon went into the second day at the top of the table as the only team with 2 wins. Needing only one more win to secure top flight korfball, Croydon were up against the welsh wizards, Cardiff City. The first half was tight with only 1 goal in it but Croydon's class told in the second half and their superior defence smothered the leak-eaters leading to a comfortable 11-6 victory. The final match was against Highbury with the North Londoners needing a win to secure an unlikely promotion. Croydon were clinical though and simply steam-rollered the Highbury team running out 13-4 winners. This allowed Birmingham to progress in 2nd place based on their win head to head against Cambridge City. All in all some great, professional performances for the Croydon side, who were well prepared and well supported on the bench and in the stands through-out. Roll on the National League. Overall this trophy caps a great season for Croydon Korfball Club with our 2nd team comfortably maintaining its place in the London Regional League, our 3rd team romping to the London 2nd division title by 5 points and our 4th team taking the bronze medal in the 3rd division.
